We administer and manage two different types of public land in Shellharbour - land owned by us, and land owned by the State (also known as crown land).

Public land is classified under the Local Government Act 1993 as either operational land or community land.

Community land is set aside for community use and includes neighbourhood parks and sports fields. The use of community land is subject to certain controls such as that the land cannot be sold, leased or licensed for more than 30 years. In addition to these controls, the act requires Councils to have plans of management for all community lands.

Plans of management categorise land, authorise leases or licenses and determine what development can take place. The key values of the land and its purpose are identified so they can be protected and enhanced. We ensure public consultation happens for plans of management before they are adopted.
